Barbells and Butterflies

With my final clip the juxtaposition between man and nature was used thoroughly. I tried to further this idea with more manipulated and edited sounds when objects of nature that have been manipulated are being displayed. The ending is abrupt; however, I wanted it this way. I believe the idea being displayed--man's manipulation of nature--is endless and shows cyclic symptoms, so I wanted this narrative to shine through in the film.

Rough Sketch #3

I had trouble composing my third clip because I didn't know what I wanted to do. However, I found this clip of a Milwaukee street at night beautiful. I liked the pictures for its imperfections, especially the way the lines of light showed up.

Rough Sketch #2

For this clip I wanted to try my hand at using sounds that could be interpreted through the visual content being displayed. The piano I recorded and the ripples in the water are utilized in this way.

Rough Sketch #1

I new what I intended to do for my final video so I used this video as my "canvas". I planned to edit this one well, with intentions of adding future material to this one, which would become my final product.

Production Strategy

There is one place I plan to further explore I on my final Drift. I would like instruments to be used in my final video; thus, I will return to the Music Building on the UWM campus. I plan to approach this area with different perspectives and new ideas; this should help me to find instruments and utilize them—through editing—in a way that makes them my own.

When capturing my images I want a certain peacefulness to penetrate through the still and moving imagery. I plan to use lots of ambiguous imagery and delicate motions with the camera, in hopes of portraying a light and dreamy feel. Also, lighting shall play a large part in my image capturing activities. I plan to find obscure lighting in hopes of furthering the idea of an otherworldly perspective.

For my sound capturing activities I plan to use industrial noises for foreground sound, explicitly. Other sounds I hope to gather should involve nature and music. I plan to blend nature sounds and musical sounds together to produce a serene fusion. This may prove difficult because of the difficulty that finding music being played often brings; however, I believe if I approach my strategy with a sturdy hand and tenacious mind, I can find what I seek.

Ten Questions

1. Are there any particularly beautifully vegetated areas in the city?

2. Are there any houses that have color that stand out?

3. Is there anywhere, in which music is prominent?

4. Is there a particular place where children playing can be heard?

5. Can the lake be utilized to create the sound of a peaceful breeze?

6. Are there particular times of day when the colors are especially interesting?

7. Can you use rainy weather in an unorthodox way?

8. Is there some type of elaborate garden in the area?

9. Are there any apparatuses that you could use for different perspectives filming?

10. Are there places high up that panoramic views and other interesting perspectives can be utilized?

Drift Assessment #4

Throughout my Drifts, the times that I felt the most creatively prosperous were times spent in the Music Building of UWM. I walked down the halls with my microphones being manipulated on opposite sides of my body. What initially was a cacophony of sound began to become more and more distinguished, depending on the particular room I was walking by. From piano, to drums, to violin, different sounds were encountered with each step I took. Finally, after I captured all the sounds, an old female musician who expressed her love for the arts, and more specifically, music, encountered me. To me, this particular experience showed all the beauty that music encompasses.
